St Brigid’s College – Biodiversity workshop and projects

Tech Mentors Elmer and Martin are working with First and Second Year students as well as some Third Year CSPE students from St. Brigid’s College in Callan to create a range of garden features on the school grounds. This workshop involved plenty of long and short term projects that will increase the biodiversity levels within the school grounds.

What we did

In this workshop we created a raised bed on the southern elevation of the school which we planted with potatoes, garlic, lettuce and strawberries.

We created a bird table from salvaged wood, and fitted bird boxes and insect hotels in the trees in various locations around the school grounds.

We identified and started to prepare the ground around an old tree stump which we will create into a planted raised bed with seats using salvaged scaffolding planks and other second hand timber.

What’s next?

In the next stage, the students will design and create seats on the same south facing elevation as the raised bed, together with further vegetable and herb planting. Susliving will issue an Aftercare and Maintenance plan and worksheet for the gardens and biodiversity features.
