Wilson’s Hospital School – Biodiversity and Green Building workshop

Wilson’s Hospital School – Biodiversity and Green Building workshop

Susliving Tech Mentors Martin and Elmer, along with Student Mentors Dave Mahony and Bernadette Mulligan presented a workshop at Wilson’s Hospital School. Together with about 20 Transition Year students, the atmosphere was great and there was a lot of enthusiasm and interest in Biodiversity and Green Building.

Many hands!

What we did

The workshop involved sowinging vegetable and flower seeds in the various beds and discussing plants that can be used effectively to attract wildlife into the garden.

We also created insect hotels around the garden and completed the construction of a vertical garden using large recycled pallets.

A raised bed made from recycled wood was planted with rhubarb, onions, strawberries, lettuce and a selection of herbs that can be used in the Home Economics class!

This group of TY students have undertaken to complete the planting of the vertical pallet garden in the coming weeks.

What’s next?

The students will be involved in the after care of the seedlings, the raised garden bed and the maintenance of the planted vertical pallet garden over the following months. Susliving Tech Mentors will send on an “Aftercare and Maintenance” plan and work sheet for the students to follow.
