On March 10th, students from Castlecomer Community School visited the Susliving Demonstration Centre in Kingsriver to take part in the Renewable Energy, Green Building and Biodiversity workshops. An enthusiastic bunch, the day kicked off with each group taking part in the Demonstration Centre workshops.
The Renewable Energy workshop went through the different ways energy is used in the home and school, and looked at different methods of conserving energy, as well as giving a simple understanding of how much energy our everyday devices are using.
The Green Building workshop looked at the different materials involved in buildings and their construction, and looked at the various different ways sustainable and green techniques can be used in building and construction. The Green Building workshop demonstrated different plastering techniques using natural materials, and also the construction of bricks for use.
The Biodiversity workshop covered food production, biodiversity in the garden, and waste. This workshop demonstrated practices such as composting fruit and vegetables, leaves, soil and grass. Along with this, the workshop demonstrated the basics of planting and the correct use and treatment of soil.
All in all, a great visit and we look forward to seeing Castlecomer Community School again!
