A group of second year students and Susliving mentors Zaki and Elmer made a great start to the new term in Coláiste Pobail Osraí in Kilkenny. The project, to design and plant a shrub border close to historic walls, proved to make a very interesting challenge for the second year students.
Taking into account the location of the new bed and factors such as sunlight, aspect and soil type, several sketch plans were drawn up by the students to create the new planting. A beautiful selection of shrubs, with contrasting foliage and and flowers were planted using compost to enrich the soil.
The new plants chosen brightened the area up and added to the biodiversity of the school surroundings. Students from other classes and teachers passing by were very encouraging and appreciative of the work being carried out.
The students thanked teachers Gemma and Lughaidh for the opportunity to carry out this worthwhile workshop at Coláiste Pobail Osraí.
