In the lead up to Christmas, Susliving Tech Mentors Elmer, Sheila and Laurie arrived at Coláiste Pobail Osraí with a festive workshop for Transition Year students. The project was centred on repurposing “waste” material in order to make Christmas decorations and gifts.
The students created inexpensive Christmas gifts recycled from toilet paper rolls, magazine supplements, cardboard, newspapers, teabags, plastic bottles and Styrofoam cups.
The workshop was mainly focused on Christmas decorations and gifts, but the various ideas could easily be adapted for use the whole year round. For example, using a piece of a willow branch and waste paper that had been printed on one side, Sheila demonstrated how to make a notebook with only a hole-puncher and a rubber band.
Presents and ornaments for the Christmas tree made from repurposed everyday materials is a great benefit to the environment, helps reduce cost from your pocket and they also make a caring and personal gift for friends and family!
