On February 25th, Loreto College in Kilkenny paid a visit to the Susliving Demonstration Centre in Kingsriver. Cold as the day was, the students and teachers from Loreto College were very enthusiastic about the workshops they were there to participate in. The Susliving Tech Mentors led the students through a variety of different workshop topics, which were chosen to be most relevant to the students and their school environment.
Splitting the students into groups, they rotated around each workshop. The first workshop was Energy, and looked at the variety of ways energy is used at home and in school. After this, the workshop progressed onto looking at ways of saving energy and reducing use. The second workshop to be availed of was Biodiversity and Food. The students learned about composting on small and larger scales, planting food in your own garden, as well as working with and increasing biodiversity levels in the garden. As usual, the Susliving hen and duck were entertaining talking points!
The final workshop was all about Repurposing and Recycling. This workshop focused on the creation of functional objects and furniture out of seemingly waste materials. Utilising pallets for a range of different furniture items, and plastic and paper for decoration and functional objects, the students had a blast putting items together and figuring out what could be made. This workshop also touched on the use of alternate materials for every day uses, such as using clay for building bricks and garden beds.
A thoroughly enjoyable day by the students and staff, as well as the Susliving team!
