On March 13th, the Susliving team welcomed CBS Callan to the Demonstration Centre. This visit was in preparation for the upcoming workshops in the school itself. The students were energetic and enthusiastic, which more than made up fro the grey weather! The workshops provided for the students from CBS Callan were across the range of sustainability – Energy Use and Savings, Biodiversity and Gardening for Food, as well as Repurposing and Recycling.
The first workshop, Energy, looked at the range of different energy users and explore the amount used in every day activities. This workshop then progressed on to look at a variety of ways to save energy, either through insulation and passive actions, or a more proactive and forward planning approach. The second workshop on Biodiversity and Food looked at a range of environmental topics. It also explored the topics of composting at home and school, biodiversity levels in gardens, as well as how easy planting and growing can be. Finally, the third workshop delved into the world of creating furniture and functional objects out of recycled and repurposed materials. It also looked at the creation and practical uses of clay as a building material, as well as other alternatives.
A great day for everyone involved, with plenty of knowledge flowing. We look forward to visiting the school soon for our next set of workshops!
