Aquaponics Workshop at the Susliving Demonstration Centre
On March 25th, the Suslivig Demonstration Centre was host to a workshop on Sustainable Aquaponics which was attended by students from several schools. This workshop was customised for the schools to link in with projects that their students were taking part in. The workshop looked in detail at potential Do-It-Yourself solutions to creating a functional and sustainable aquaponics system.
By utilising a self-contained nutrient cycle with the help of fish or liquid fertiliser, the system allows for the growing of various plants without soil. This workshop looked at the practical setup of such a system using sustainable resources and repurposed materials. Following this, the students examined the different types of substrates that could be used in the system, as well as any practical alternatives to parts of the system.
Finally, the focus moved to the maintenance and aftercare of the system. This section looked at the importance of getting the balance of nutrient levels correct, installation of the system in a practical location, as well as long term care and use plans.
Overall it was a very enjoyable workshop and we wish all the students the best of luck with their projects!
